Why sizes on maps lie
Web maps use the Mercator projection, which keeps shapes looking right but stretches everything more the further it is from the equator. Greenland looks as big as Africa; Africa is about 14 times bigger. We move every outline on a model of the round Earth instead, so a shape dropped on your town is the size it really is.
Where the outlines come from
Parks, lakes and landmarks are traced from OpenStreetMap, the world's open map. Countries come from Natural Earth, wildfire perimeters from NIFC. Units like acres and pitches are drawn to their exact official dimensions. News sites can embed any map for free: see how.
